A Class B license allows a contractor to build structures involving two or more unrelated trades, which is the license required for new homes, ADUs and full rebuilds. The qualifying individual is the person whose experience and examination the license rests on; at Axe Construction that is the founder, who is also a licensed California attorney.

Our insurance

  • Workers’ compensation: on file with the Contractors State License Board through the State Compensation Insurance Fund, policy effective June 4, 2024 through June 4, 2027. Every person who works on your site is covered.
  • General liability: a certificate of insurance naming you as certificate holder is provided before any contract is signed. Ask for it at the consultation.

California law does not allow contractors to advertise bonding, so you will not see it mentioned here; the state record shows what is on file.

How to verify any contractor's license in two minutes

  1. Go to cslb.ca.gov and choose Check a License.
  2. Enter the license number. For Axe Construction, type 1069232 or open cslb.ca.gov/1069232 directly.
  3. Confirm the business name matches the name on your estimate and contract: AXE CONSTRUCTION INC.
  4. Confirm the status reads current and active and the classification reads B – General Building.
  5. Confirm workers’ compensation is on file, with an expiration date in the future.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the record for any complaint disclosure or disciplinary action.

If any of those items does not match, ask the contractor why before you sign anything. The CSLB Disaster Help Center explains the rules that protect fire survivors, including the limit on down payments, and how to file a complaint.

How our contracts work

  • A written contract with a defined scope, allowances spelled out, a schedule, and change orders in writing with a price before the work happens.
  • Where California’s home improvement contract rules apply, the down payment is capped at $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less; we apply the same cap to our rebuild and ADU contracts.
  • Progress payments that match work completed or materials delivered, never ahead of the work.
  • Lien releases from us and from our subcontractors with each payment, and a final package with the certificate of occupancy and warranties.

Most construction disputes start in the contract, not on the job site. I went to law school before I became a contractor, so every agreement we write spells out scope, allowances, change orders and the schedule in plain terms. When nothing is left vague, there is nothing to argue about later.
